Gardenia Kiddie Workshop: The Ultimate Bread Journey

It was our second visit to Gardenia (first was during Z’s field trip last year) but this time it’s for the summer workshop. The staff distributed Gardenia Kiddie Workshop shirts for the kids to wear upon our arrival.

Activity Area

We settled in the activity area and they prepared kiddie tables and chairs for the kids. May naka-ready pang snacks and drinks.

Dance Number

The staff welcomed the kids with a dance performance. They played the Gardenia Pocket sandwich theme song for the warm-up exercise and the kids followed each dance step enthusiastically. May picture taking pa sila with Pocket! 🙂

Name Tags & Introduction

How cute is are these bread-shaped name tags? Moms were asked to join the name tag activity. I did Z’s name tag and he decorated mine. After that we introduced ourselves — I introduced Z, mentioned his hobbies, fave color, etc. and he did the same for me.

Z was a little shy when we did the introductions (actually both of us were, pero natapos naman namin ng maayos haha) 🙂

Coloring & Treasure Hunting

The next activity featured Twiggy. Twiggies cake is one of my kids’ favorite school snacks. Did you know that Twiggies 3 flavors/colors represent something? It’s for you to find out when you and your kids join the workshop!

The kids had a coloring activity and a Twiggies treasure hunt. The winning team received a Twiggies surprise pack and all of the kids got to take home the Twiggies they found in the activity area.

Traditional Bread Making

They’ve set up a mini kitchen for the baking/cooking activity. The kids were introduced to basic bread making. Since Gardenia has a fully-automated facility to make loaves of bread (untouched by human hands!), the kids learned how to make it using the old process of mixing dry & wet ingredients and kneading the dough by hands.

Proper Handwashing

Since their hands were all messy, the staff taught the kids how to properly wash their hands. There’s a guide on proper handwashing and it’s important that kids learn proper hygiene early in their lives.

Plant Tour

We’re familiar with the plant tour since Z and I already experienced it last year, but during the workshop, sinorpresa nila kaming mga mommies — the kids acted as tour guides! 🙂

There are steps for the bread-making process and they stationed one or two kids for each one. When we came to Z’s station, he began reciting and reading his lines.

It was a proud-momma moment for me because when he started reading, other mommies were surprised that he reads fast, with proper stress and intonation. They were telling me, “Ang bilis niya magbasa!” and “Ang galing naman.” 🙂 Na-impress pa lalo sila because they thought he’s 6 years old, pero I told them that he’s 8 already and he’s just shorter than his peers.

Z’s actually a fluent reader (started reading when he was 4), but it didn’t happen overnight. I used some helpful tools and trained him to read books everyday. If you want to know our secret, check out my blog post Raising Readers: Helping My Kids Develop a Love for Reading.

Know Your G-Locks

Fun fact mga mommies! G-locks ang tawag sa locks ng Gardenia bread packs, and they’re color-coded. Each color corresponds to a particular production day, so next time you’re buying, check the color to get the freshest pack! 🙂

Proper Nutrition

After the plant tour, the kids were instructed to go back to the activity area. They had a mini stage performance featuring food as characters. My son volunteered for the fish character and delivered a few lines during the performance.

The staff gave a lecture about proper nutrition and how the Go, Grow, and Glow food groups help kids become strong and healthy.

Painting

It was nearing noontime when we were asked to join the kids for a painting activity. Actually gutom na kami lahat pero nawala yung gutom ko when I saw the Gardenia bread plaster molds. Ang cute! 🙂

Z chose to copy the Gardenia Classic white bread and I opted for a bright-colored bread design naman.

Lunch & Movie Viewing

We were handed Max’s meal packs for lunch. 🙂 Then the kids were treated to an animated film afterward.

The film played was Ferdinand and Z couldn’t be any happier. Favorite niya kasi ’cause it was hilarious.

Breadstore Work

It was fun when the kids role-played into sales clerks at the bread store. They ran the cashier and did some promotion and customer service tasks.

Nag-pictorial din sila sa mock facility standee sa labas. 🙂

Toasties Polvoron

When we returned to the kitchen, moms were invited to help their kids prepare some yummy treats. Our first recipe — polvoron. I remember making polvoron with my mom when I was an elementary student. Nostalgia hit me when my son and I started making our own polvoron.

To make Toasties polvoron, we only need 3 ingredients: Gardenia Toasties, sugar, and melted butter. Crush the toasties and mix it with sugar and butter, and voila! Super yummy ng polvoron na ‘to, promise!

Ham ‘n Cheese Pinwheels

Probably my son’s favorite part. He said the ham and cheese pinwheels are yummy and the rolling part was fun.

To make Ham ‘n Cheese Pinwheels, flatten a Gardenia classic bread loaf with a rolling pin, spread mayonnaise, add ham and cheese slices, then roll it. Cut the rolled bread into 4 or 6 pieces. When we made the recipe at home, we fried a few pieces and they’re just as delish.

Twiggies Cake Pops

Kids will surely love doing this with you, Mommies! To make a cake pop, crumble a pack of Twiggies and mix it with condensed milk, form a 1 1/2 inch ball, insert a lollipop stick, dip into Gardenia Delicia chocolate spread & fresh milk mixture, then add sprinkles and marshmallows on top. This is a sure hit for a sweet tooth!

Freebies & Gift Packs

To wrap up the workshop, the kids were asked to answer an activity sheet — what they learned for the day and what was their favorite activity. Shortly after, they were given certificates and gift packs. We all left the Gardenia Factory with happy memories and bags filled with Gardenia treats. 🙂

Thank you Gardenia PH and Mommy Bloggers Philippines for the Ultimate Bread Journey! I had an enjoyable time “kidulting” with my son.

Did you know that ‘Kidulting’ can be a Parenting Style?

Gardenia Philippines, through the Gardenia Summer Workshop, promotes Kidulting as a method of parenting wherein adults and kids bond together in activities they can both playfully participate. This allows for parents to recapture their childhood experiences, take a break from adult responsibilities, and create joyful memories with their children.

You can unleash the “kid-in-me” by doing activities with your kids such as painting artworks and creating crafts, playing console games, visiting a kid theme park, throwing a pajama party, joining a role play (playing doctor or engineer), baking/cooking, and more!

In between activities, make sure you have prepared on-the-go snacks that the kids can munch on when they’re HANGRY (angry because they’re hungry LOL). Always bring with you a Gardenia Pocket Sandwich, available now in 4 flavors: chocolate, peanut butter, cheese, and strawberry pastillas. 🙂
