BrainLight Singapore Maths: Encouraging Kids to be Critical Thinkers & Problem Solvers

BrainLight Learning Center

Last weekend I attended the Parent’s Session at BrainLight Singapore Maths after attending Mega Prime Celebrations Pinasarap Holiday Workshop.

I’ve been hearing about Singapore Math for years but I haven’t really gotten close to what it really is and how it’s done. During the session, I understood how important it is to be learned by a developing child at a very young age.

Math is OUR Weakness

I am worried that my eldest is lagging behind in Math. It’s no surprise because I’m not good at Math either. Namamana ba? Haha. I remember when I was a student, I got my first line of 7 in Math while most of my other subjects were 90 and above. Imagine my disappointment.

Well last week, my son came home from school, crying. When I asked him why, he said, “I only got 2 correct answers in my Math exam.” That’s a periodical exam, ladies and gents. He’s in Grade 4 and it’s difficult for me to see him struggle.

As per data from their school’s eGradebook, his Math grade dropped from 90 (1st period) to 81 (2nd period) — 9th row on the photo 🙁

So how can we help our kids be confident in Mathematics? Parang marami ang takot o ayaw kapag Math na ang pinag-uusapan. Even grown-ups! I guess it’s time we break the “chain”.

What is Singapore Math?

We need to prepare children for the 21st century by teaching them to persist, think critically, and problem solve.

The Singapore Mathematics Curriculum states that “An emphasis on Mathematics Education will ensure that we have an increasingly Competitive Workforce to meet the challenges of the 21st century.”

It is recognized that mathematics is “an excellent vehicle for the development and improvement of a person’s intellectual competence, logical reasoning, spatial visualization, analysis, and abstract thought.” – Ministry of Education Singapore 2006

BrainLight is an after-school math enrichment program center based on the world-renowned Singapore Mathematics Curriculum set by the Ministry of Education of Singapore (MOE). They use MOE-approved materials in teaching Singapore Math.

At BrainLight Learning Center, children are encouraged and taught to be analytical & critical thinkers. They have brought this method to the Philippines to help young kids excel in Math by helping them better understand math concepts.

How is BrainLight Different?

Other Math programs focus on Mathematics Operations and memorizations of steps and procedures, but at BrainLight, they present the concepts differently and they have lots of application skills.

Emphasis on Problem Solving

The heart of its program is helping kids develop problem-solving skills.

BrainLight Singapore Maths Emphasis on Problem Solving

Emphasis on Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract Approach

Using concrete (tangible objects) and pictorial representations help students acquire abstract ideas.

Emphasis on Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract Approach

Emphasis on Visualization

Uses Model Method as one of the strategies to represent abstract ideas. It helps average learners to understand abstract ideas.

The Model Method teaches kids pre-algebra and mental computation techniques

Emphasis on Problem Solving Heuristics

This includes drawing diagrams and models, making systematic lists, simplifying problems, looking for patterns, before and after, guess and check, making suppositions, etc.

Emphasis on Thinking

When faced with unfamiliar math problems, such as getting the area of a trapezium, the child uses past learned knowledge to make connections and eventually solve the problem.

BrainLight Learning Center at BGC

Their learning center is a conducive environment for learning. I love how kid-friendly their classroom is. The tools, materials, and manipulatives are also well-arranged and well-maintained.

BrainLight Singapore Math program is not only for those who are struggling in Math but it’s also for those who are advanced learners. Their Math Olympiad program is for advanced learners who want to “stretch” their Math skills further.

Other countries have already adopted Singapore Math because it’s an effective tool for students to be able to handle complexity and give them the ability to explain and solve a problem.

They have a reward system wherein their students earn stamps in exchange for exciting rewards, making them more motivated to learn! 🙂 Sana may ganito sa lahat ng schools noh? Parang nasa TimeZone lang!
