Wika’y Galing for Kids: Learn Filipino Online

We’ve been invited to try Wika’y Galing and since we are on Enhanced Community Quarantine due to Covid-19 pandemic, we gladly accepted the invitation.

Honestly, I was skeptical to let my child join kasi we have that mentality na ‘Filipino naman tayo, bakit kailangan pa natin mag-aral ng Filipino?” But by the end of this post you’ll know why. 🙂

Wika’y Galing

Wika’y Galing is an online tutorial program for 9-18 years old kids. The program is anchored on Philippine culture and appreciating one’s Filipino identity.

How Does Wika’y Galing Work?

  1. Daily exposure to the Filipino language through engaging activities
  2. Access to an online portal using Adarna E-books
  3. Online classes with friendly Filipino teachers and 2-3 students

Our Wika’y Galing Experience

My son attended a progressive preschool so he was used to communicating in English. When we transferred him to another private school and the students’ primary spoken language is Filipino, he learned how to communicate in Filipino. He can speak well using both English and Filipino.. depende sa kausap niya yung ginagamit niyang language.

Z’s Wika’y Galing assessment lasted for 45 minutes via Google Hangouts with a teacher. After the assessment, they sent us the results and his schedule.

Wika’y Galing Assessment Results

I received his assessment results a few days after the online session:

He will be in the Low Intermediate level of the program:

KOMANDANTE (Levels 8 -14): Low Intermediate

Beginning Filipino and Sentence Writing

These levels are for children who have learned words in Filipino but cannot use them in proper sentences and rely heavily on translation to comprehend stories. The lessons help them acquire good oral communication skills and understand broad grammar rules with correct usage. They learn to speak, write and understand simple to complex sentences and compose short paragraphs (3-5 sentences). Learned skills enable them to confidently use the language in simple conversation and improve in academics.

Online Videoconferencing & Assignments

Online classes are done via Google Hangouts, 2x a week, and each session is 45 minutes long. During their classes, they have recitations, discussions, reading drills, and writing activities. For those days na walang online sessions, kids are given assignments via Google Docs. Nandun na rin yung scores and teacher’s observations.

Here are a few of the assigned tasks that we uploaded to his Student’s Portfolio in Google Drive:

Z is good conversationalist, but it’s a different story when he writes. Baliktad kami. I’m a writer and not at all great when it comes to [public] speaking. His paragraph says:

Nay tay. Salamat po sa mga ginawa po sa amin at nang kapatid ko. Binigyan niyo po kami ng lakas, supporta, at mahal. At sana po na mahalin niyo po kami ng kapatid ko araw-araw po palagi. At kami mag-aalaga sa inyo kapag lumaki na po kayo at tumanda Salamat po sa lahat.

It’s obvious that he still needs to improve his skills (actually pati penmanship!) 🙂 I did the right thing letting him take Wika’y Galing Online Filipino classes.

I had a GIVEAWAY last month on my Purple Pieces Facebook Page and TWO MOMS will be given FREE trial classes for their kids. 🙂

Salamat Teacher Hanani at Wika’y Galing for helping parents like me to educate kids especially during these trying times. 🙂
