Dr. Noufal Mais on the Importance of Regular Eye Checkups

As anyone with eye conditions knows, receiving regular eye exams and checkups is essential for maintaining and prolonging the quality of our vision. With current diagnostic and treatment technologies, it’s more important than ever to take advantage of the increased efficiencies that modern eye-care facilities offer their patients.

In Western Canada, prominent optometrist Dr. Noufal Mais has made offering these technologies a centerpiece of his franchise’s brand. Dr. Mais now operates five branches of The Eye Centre, having opened the first one in Drayton Valley, AB just after receiving his degree. A talented entrepreneur, Dr. Mais quickly expanded the franchise into other small towns in Alberta and Saskatchewan, with a focus on providing top-quality care to traditionally underserved communities.

Dr. Mais is an expert on optimizing eye health. Today, he’s offering our readers some tips on how frequently they should receive checkups, along with information about some associated costs.

Dr. Mais points out that regular eye exams are important not just for keeping up to date on your prescriptions, but also for detecting early signs of serious health issues such as glaucoma, cataracts, and even diabetes. “These exams provide clues to systemic diseases before they manifest more overt symptoms,” Dr. Mais explains.

Dr. Mais recommends that adults who wear glasses or contacts should have their eyes checked every one to two years, depending on their age and associated risk factors. For adults who are experiencing new symptoms of vision loss, it’s important to be seen right away before irreversible damage is done.

For children, Dr. Mais recommends an eye exam at least once before starting school. For those with vision issues, it’s important to be seen annually to catch any developmental issues that could affect their academic performance.

The same rule applies to those over 65 – annual exams are vital for this higher-risk population. Dr. Mais stresses that older adults shouldn’t rely on over-the-counter reading glasses.

“I’ve had many older patients who believe they can rely on a one-size-fits-all solution, but they find that they’re having increased headaches and eye fatigue. It’s important to identify the correct lens and frame parameters and have your eyes checked regularly for early signs of manageable diseases.”

As for costs, they can vary depending on the specific services. Dr. Mais points out that in Alberta, eye exam fees for adults (ages 19-64) typically range from $85 to $150. For children and seniors, the cost may be partially or fully covered by provincial health care plans. Saskatchewan has a similar pricing structure, with the added benefit that children under the age of 18 and seniors over the age of 65 have their routine eye exams covered by provincial health insurance. For those who do have to pay out-of-pocket, Dr. Mais stresses that the costs are well worth the benefits. “Investing in regular eye exams is investing in your overall health.”

Regular eye exams offer benefits that extend beyond clear vision. Your optometrist can work with you on a personalized plan for your eye care, including choosing the right contact lenses or frames that fit your lifestyle. “I’ve had patients who are allergic to certain metals used in frames, and we’ve been able to identify the problem and find the right solution for them.”

With the guidance of experienced eye doctors like Dr. Mais, patients can be proactive in preserving their eye health. The value of regular checkups in the early detection and prevention of serious diseases is immeasurable.
