Flowering Plants You Can Grow in Your Home Garden

Flowers are beautiful. They make your home colorful, appealing, and relaxing. Studies show that aside from aesthetics, flowers also contribute to our emotional health. If you own a house, planting flowers is highly recommended.

Flowers give off a positive and inviting feeling to its residents as well as neighbors, visitors, and passersby. If you just fully paid for the house and lot of your dreams and it comes with a garden or an extra space where you can plant beautiful blooms, here are some of the best flowering plants you can grow at home.

Petunia

Petunias are colorful flowers that add a burst of vibrance and color to any garden, especially if they are located in a sunny area. Petunias are also perfect for growing in the Philippines because they love the sun and often don’t tolerate cool conditions well. It is best to grow petunias in the months of May or June. These purple, white, red, and pink trumpet-shaped flowers should receive at least six hours of direct sunlight.

Remember, though, that extreme heat can cause petunias to stop blooming, so if the heat is unbearable, it is best to place them under partial shade, especially during the afternoons when the sun is too hot. Petunias also love fertilizers–be it organic, inorganic, or both. Feeding them at least once a month of fertilizer is ideal. However, some varieties require once-a-week fertilization, so research the variety of petunia you have to provide their nutritional requirements.

Gumamela

If you want to give your home a tropical vibe, planting a gumamela plant or hibiscus is the best way to go. This plant has flowers in different hues and color combinations which will undoubtedly add a pop of color to your home. Gumamela fares well in full sun and tolerates partial shade. They do not need frequent watering, so it is one of the low-maintenance plants to grow in the Philippines.

Gumamela is a shrub and can be worked as hedges in your home, especially if you want to start a landscape in your home. During this plant’s growing season, it is recommended that you prune it back and cut off flowers before they form seed heads so that it will blossom and re-bloom.

Kalachuchi

Another flowering plant that can make your home look like a tropical garden is the kalachuchi or plumeria. Kalachuchis come in various colors, such as white, yellow, red, and pink. In the Philippines, this flower is often associated with ghosts and death. However, this does not stop many Filipinos from planting a kalachuchi tree in their gardens.

Kalachuchi plants or trees abundantly produce fragrant clusters of flowers that can be used in making traditional Hawaiian leis. Caring for kalachuchi is minimal, too. They don’t require much watering, but it is best to fertilize them every two or three weeks throughout their active growing season. Your kalachuchi will fare well if you grow them in a well-draining, slightly acidic soil and if you allow them to soak under the full sun for at least six hours a day.

Orchids

With 30,000 different species and about 200,000 hybrids worldwide, orchids are the largest body of flowering plants. Though orchids are native to the tropics, they survive in different growing conditions. If you want to grow orchids that do not have any leaves or have leathery leaves, they need a lot of sunlight. Otherwise, if the orchid has limp leaves, that plant is sensitive to light.

If you plan on keeping orchids outdoors, it is recommended that you allow your orchids to get 12 to 14 hours of sunlight every day. If you want to keep them indoors, it is best to place them in a section of your home that has high humidity and air circulation. It is safe to water your orchids at least once a week. Since their growing mediums do not have plenty of nutrients, you should fertilize your orchids; a liquid fertilizer is more preferred.

May these flowering plants add color and life to your already beautiful home garden. Happy planting, and don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers!
